Outside of Pathan and Raina. None of our batmen are in good form.
With Sachin in there our lineup would be so much better.

Gambhir and Sehwag are class players, I'd back them to come good on the big stage. I just think in England Sachin's experience and technical skill a is a huge asset and that we could really use him in the squad, with Gambhir in at 3. Not really worried about 'form' tbh anyway, good players are good players as far I'm concerned.

Badri is outstanding back up in the middle order, don't think he could open though. Uthappa hasn't earned a place. Rohit Sharma has progressed since the last world t20 and should be a certainty.

Still think we have the best t20 side in world cricket, should definitely go in as favourites.

My XI would be (Tendulkar won't play, I'm almost certain):

1 Sehwag
2 Gambhir
3 Raina 1st Badrinath, then Rahane & Pujara back up
4 Rohit Sharma
5 Yuvraj
6 Dhoni Dinesh Karthik back up
7 Yusuf Pathan
8 Irfan Pathan
9 Harbhajan Singh Ojha/Piyush Chawla back up
10 Zaheer Khan
11 Ishant Sharma RP Singh & Praveen Kumar back up

Can't see that side losing many games, plenty of bowling options (everyone bowls except gambhir and dhoni!) and decent variety, lot's of flexibility in the batting, power hitting ability from 1-8 and Harbhajan's not bad at no.9, Zaheer isn't a bad no.10 either. Not sure about the order as the middle order can all score big. Ideally get Yusuf and Yuvraj in with as good a platform as possible. Could be better in the field perhaps, but Raina, Yuvraj and Rohit ensure we'll have a strongish infield. No worries for me!

EDIT: after looking at thes side, I'm actually quite excited about the world T20, our side's only gotten stronger, main rivals Pakistan aren't the force they were last time though they'll still field a very strong bowling attack (afridi, tanvir, gul). South Africa look very strong but some of their best player look tired right now, Roelof gives them excellent balance. Australia are a little behind India and SA but are still a strong side, Johnson gives them an excellent cutting edge and if Lee finds form and pace they could be a mtach winning new ball pair. The international sides are so much stronger than the mediocre IPL ones, can't wait!

Opening position - Sehwag, Gambhir and Rohit .... would open with Rohit if needed
Other batting positions - Raina, YP, Yuvi and Badri / Nayar /?
WK - Dhoni and Karthik
Spinners - Bhajji and Ojha
Pacers - RP, IP, Zak and Ishant

too bad that Tendulkar is not one of the probables! There is one batting slot open, in my book. Someone like Badri or Nayar, if he does well in IPL can grab it .... for bowling, we have quite a few options with likes of Munaf and Sreesant also there. Munaf loses a little wrt his fielding and Sree is more like a test match bowler with his tendency to bowl a lot fuller to get the swing which can go both ways

Ojha is in such good form that it's hard to leave him out. I believe in picking up players who are in form vs big names irrespective of their form. I remember Pak had fielded big names in 2003 WC and failed to go to super six. I have seen Ind fail in 2007 with an group of big names and Pak didn't do well in that WC too. To me it's abt picking up guys in form rather than playing guys based on reputation and hoping for them to come good

my playing 11 would be something like this

Sehwag
Gambhir
Raina
Rohit
YP
Dhoni
Karthik/Yuvi
Bhajji/Ojha
Zak / IP
RP
Ishant

Franchise owners are working against the priority of assembling a good T20 team for India. We've seen several India prospects not get a game (Rahane, Yo Mahesh) or bat too low (Kohli, Dhawan, Badrinath, Tiwary, even Dhoni himself). bowl less than their quota (Tyagi, all the Delhi bowlers in the last match bar Nehra, Balaji, Nayar, Yusuf Pathan) and are called in times of crisis (Delhi's lower order) or with few overs to play (Yuvraj, Rohit Sharma). Only Raina has had it good. Worse, India's prospective opening combination is likely to be broken.

If IPL performances were a gauge, Raina, Yuvraj, Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik would be automatic selections as they have at least one 50 each, even as some internationals have more. The selectors have little to choose from, and it's not much.

That's a good squad, though Badrinath or Rahane for Uthappa would be a better option. If a backup is needed, they can send Irfan or Dhoni to open. The selection of Mishra is a good one, as he too is a run-scoring option, albeit minor. The bowling isn't that great that four would be enough to win a match, and India's part-timers (like other part-timers and filler bowlers) are cannon-fodder in T20. When bowling 20 tight overs is of prime importance, the bowling attack to pick will be Harbhajan, Mishra, Praveen, Zaheer and RP Singh.

Gambhir, Sehwag, Raina, Yuvraj, Rohit, Dhoni, Karthik, Yusuf, Harbhajan, Zaheer and Ishant are in for sure. That leaves room for a reserve batsman, two seamers and another spinner.

Uthappa has been terrible in the IPL, no way he should be in the squad. The reserve batsman should be either Badrinath (based on T20 performances) or Kohi (based on ability to open or bat down the order). Pathan's still ahead of Nayar for one of the seamer spots and I'd still take Praveen over RP for the other one. The final spot is a toss-up between Ojha, Mishra and Jadeja. Ojha's been superb in the IPL, Jadeja's made solid contributions with both bat and ball and Mishra has a great T20 record. Jadeja's my man but Ojha could easily take this one.

I'm not following the IPL, but it seems Uthappa has given himself a boost today (unfortunately, IMO).

Among Indian seamers in the IPL - sounds like RP's doing the best by practically every measure (SR, ER, ave). He should be an automatic pick?

@jeevan .... I would have RP in, he is bowling superbly atm

@ all .... Let say if you had to pick two from IP [I Pathan], Zak and Praveen, which two would you pick

Good selections but do they really need four reserve bowlers? Can't see a batsman getting injured but if it happens, Dhoni will have too many bowling options.

Not entirely convinced by ravindra jadeja tbh, his bowling has looked poor in helpful conditions and his batting unspectacular, top fielder though. Would have picked a reserve specialist bat instead, probably badri. Only one keeper is a slight worry considering dhoni's back problems too, but it's a small squad so no room really.

not a bad squad but they could have chosen two from Zak, Praveen and IP to accommodate Karthik. Ind needs a back up WK and Karthik bats too!

Cricinfo - RP eyes new ball for India

RP Singh should definitely recieve the new ball. He is a brilliant wicket taker and I think he could thrive in T20 in England.
RP's certainly an option, but Ishant is looking better and better in this format as the tournament progresses. Irfan Pathan should be guaranteed a place, so you need to pick 2 from Ishant, Zaheer, Praveen (who I think could be very useful in England with the new ball) and RP. It's a good problem to have I suppose, the squad looks very strong. Going on record predicting an India vs South Africa final. Australia will go out in the semis.
