I love the Ashes because it's so pure. It's Test cricket, played by the two countries whose populations most love the longer form of the game generally, and this Series in particular.

Anyway, my favourite Ashes memory is Mick Slater at Lords in 1993. It was straight out of a Boys Own Manual - a greenhorn opener, in the grandest theatre of all, peeling off a chanceless hundred on his first tour...a mere 12 months after making his FC debut.
