While the Chapell's outnumber the Waugh's by one (or two if you consider grandpa Sir Victor Richardson), to me the achievements of the Waughs is far greater.

What does everyone else think ?

Some comparisons:
In batting - while I don't have their batting averages, from memory and hearsay, I would think Greg Chapell and Steve Waugh would have not too dissimilar batting averages, while Mark's would be way ahead of Ian's. (Someone who has access to the records can clarify this.)

In fielding- Greg's phenomenal fielding (I believe in the slip area) is equalled by Mark. While Steve's ground fielding and ability to break the wicket (from around the wicket), would put him ahead of Ian.

In bowling- I am not sure what Greg's bowling records are, but Steve had a reasonable bowling record till he gave up bowling regularly in late 90's.

Greg's continuing contribution by way of coaching (and Trevor's) are yet to be achieved by the Waughs (but this cannot be ruled out in the future).

What do the members of the cricket web think? If Someone can create a vote it would be interesting.
I have created a poll for you.

Here are their Test records:

GS Chappell 87 151 19 7110 247* 53.86 24 31 122 -
SR Waugh 168 260 46 10927 200 51.06 32 50 112 -
IM Chappell 75 136 10 5345 196 42.42 14 26 105 -
ME Waugh 128 209 17 8029 153* 41.81 20 47 181 -
TM Chappell 3 6 1 79 27 15.80 0 0 2 0

SR Waugh 7805 332 3445 92 37.44 5-28 3 - 84.8 2.64
GS Chappell 5327 208 1913 47 40.70 5-61 1 - 113.3 2.15
ME Waugh 4853 171 2429 59 41.16 5-40 1 - 82.2 3.00
IM Chappell 2873 87 1316 20 65.80 2-21 - - 143.6 2.74

In my opinion Mark Waugh is the most talented batsman and best fielder, Greg Chappell is overall the best and most complete batter, Steve Waugh is the one you would choose to bat for your life and also the best bowler, while Ian Chappell was an underrated batsman and fine captain. Trevor Chappell does not really come into it. Overall I would say the Chappell's are Australia's best cricketing family but only just.
