Well, as he's put the quote a couple of lines beneath, I suppose a colon would be okay. But it's a comma, it's a fact, it's simple.
For example, Shane Warne threw the ball at Pietersen at the Gabba, to which Pietersen said, "**** off."
That's grammatically correct, a colon wouldn't be, and I'll hear nothing that says otherwise.
