England name assistant coach

Former Zimbabwe captain Andy Flower has been named as assistant to new England coach Peter Moores, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced today.

Moores who recently replaced Duncan Fletcher at the helm, told the media that the appointment was great news for English cricket.

“Andy will bring to the support staff a wealth of international experience as well as a clear understanding of the domestic game in England and Wales,” he said.

“He has worked at the national academy for the past two seasons as a specialist batting coach and has done an excellent job. I am sure all the players will respond to his style and enjoy working with him.

“It was great news for me when it was confirmed that Andy had agreed to accept this appointment and I feel that he will have a significant impact in the future.”

Flower, who was one of the greatest ever wicketkeeper-batsmen, will meet up with the side in London ahead of England’s first Test against the West Indies on the 17th of May and has retired from playing with Essex in order to start his new career.

Moores also thanked outgoing assistant coach Matthew Maynard who has held the position since late 2004.

“I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Matthew and wish him well in his future coaching commitments.”
