The Ground:
Eden Gardens is situated in Kolkata and is by far and away the oldest cricketing venue in India. It has also become the symbol of Indian cricket to such an extent that it is now known as the Lord's of Asia.
Eden Gardens can lay claim to being one of, if not the finest, venues in the world. The present Eden Gardens Cricket Club came into existence in the year 1864. The first test match was against Douglas Jardine's MCC in January, 1934.
Since then the ground has hosted several important matches including the 1987 World Cup final in which Allan Border's Australia defeated overwhelming favourites England, the Hero Cup in 1993 in which India beat the West Indies in the finals (Anil Kumble taking six for 12 - the best ODI bowling figures by an Indian), and the historical 2000/01 test against the Australians which is considered the greatest test comeback by a team. Harbhajan Singh also became the first Indian to take a hat-trick in Test cricket in that game.
Unfortunately, the ground was the scene of one of the least memorable scenes in the history of the game, the 1996 World Cup semi-final that was abandoned due to crowd trouble.
VVS Laxman holds the record for the highest score with his famous 281 against Australia while Javagal Srinath holds the best bowling, with 13/132. India hold the best total, with 657-7 declared against Australia, but they also hold the lowest with 90 against the West Indies.
As a part of modernisation of the stadium, Eden Gardens has seen many changes over the years from new stands to the installation of four gigantic floodlights. It has a maximum capacity of over 100,000, only rivalled among cricket stadiums by the MCG.
