SA v Pak : Day 4

Tuesday, October 21 2003

Pakistan bowled themselves into control of the first Test match against South Africa. Resuming on 99/1, the South Africans lost wickets at regular intervals to be all-out for 241. Gibbs (59) and Dippenaar (27) added few to their overnight totals before they both perished to Shoaib Akhtar.

Akhtar and Kaneria then ripped through the rest of the South African batting order, as only Gary Kirsten (46) crossed 18 runs. Shoaib ended with 4/36, while young leggie Kaneria took his fifth career 5-wicket haul - 5/46.

Chasing just 161 runs to win, Pakistan went out with the intention to win the Test in style. Imran Farhat and Taufeeq Umar batted with ease as they put on 134 runs for the fall of the first wicket. That was the second century partnership of the game between the two batsmen. A top edge from Farhat off Smith's part-timers eventually accounted for Farhat, as he checked out for 58.

Six (6) balls later play was called off with Pakistan sitting pretty at 137/1 needing only 24 runs for victory. First innings centurion Umar is on 61 not out with Yasir Hameed on 3. Umar will be on strike to Kallis tomorrow as Pakistan look to read South Africa their final rights.
