NZ vs India Day 3

Sunday, October 19 2003

New Zealand started the day on 536/5 with Stephen Fleming stating that he wanted 600 plus to make the follow-on mark as difficult as possible for the Indians on what is a superb batting strip.

Craig McMillan raised another century in the morning session and straight afterwards Fleming declared at a mammoth 630/6 with 4 kiwis making centuries. Daniel Vettori had also batted well making 48 not out off 50 balls. India then saw through the remaining 40 minutes to lunch without the loss of a wicket.

The afternoon session saw some superb batting from Sehwag who hit all but Vettori to all corners of the ground and being especially severe on Paul Wiseman and Ian Butler who bowled fast but varying his length too often cost him.

Chopra offered good support before he was caught at first slip by Astle off Tuffey for 60 and his performances in this series must surely have secured his opening spot for the tour of Australia.

Rahul Dravid then came to the crease and with Sehwag they saw India safely through to stumps at 200/1 with another 227 runs required to avoid the follow up.

The only way we can see any result other than a draw is if India decides to declare as soon as they reach the follow on mark of 430 and then rely on Stephen Fleming setting India 400 to win on the final day. This is however very unlikely with the New Zealand camp happy enough to come out of the series with a 0-0 result.

Score Summary

New Zealand 630/6 dec (M Richardson 145, S Styris 119, L Vincent 106, C McMillan 100*, A Kumble 3/181)

India 200/1 (V Sehwag 128*, A Chopra 60, D Tuffey 1/45)
