Australia Complete Victory

Monday, October 13 2003

Australia have completed victory against Zimbabwe in the First Test at the WACA, despite some surprising resistance from Raymond Price and Heath Streak.

Resuming the day at 9/272, Price in particular, while not being a batsman of note, continued to frustrate the depleted Australian bowling attack.

The attack was left in an incredibly weak position following an injury to Darren Lehmann which threatens to keep him out of the next Test match.

Streak, meanwhile, showed impressive composure with the blade in scoring an unbeaten 71.

Price was the sole wicket to fall on the day when he was caught by Steve Waugh off the bowling of Andy Bichel - surviving a close LBW shout the previous delivery, for 36.

Bichel finished with figures of 4/63.

Final Scores

Australia 6 dec. 735 (M Hayden 380, A Gilchrist 112*, S Waugh 78, D Martyn 53, S Ervine 4/146)

Zimbabwe 239 (T Gripper 53, C Wishart 46, B Lee 3/48, J Gillespie 3/52)

Zimbabwe 321 (f/o) (H Streak 71*, M Vermeulen 63, S Ervine 53, A Bichel 4/63, D Lehmann 3/61)

Australia won by an innings and 175 runs.
