Tri Series: Game 1 Abandoned

Friday, October 24 2003

The torrential rains of monsoon season in Chennai had the final impact on the opening game between India and New Zealand in the TVS Tri Nations Tournament.

India, without captain Sourav Ganguly included specialist wicket keeper, Parthiv Patel in the squad alongside Ajit Agarkar and VVS Laxman. New Zealand had a fit Jacob Oram and Chris Cairns to boost their side, along with the ODI specialists Chris Harris, Paul Hitchcock and Brendon McCullum.

Rahul Dravid won the toss, and on a bouncy Chennai wicket had no hesitation in batting first. Sehwag and Tendulkar once again got India off to a blazing start, as Sehwag was the aggressor. Dropped by Chris Cairns near the boundary, Sehwag continued on to slash and majestically drive his way to a big score.

Tendulkar showed glimpses of his World Cup 2003 form, as he looked set for a big innings. On 31 however, Sehwag clipped a Chris Cairns delivery on to his stumps. Despite looking solid, Sehwag departed once again for a low score and the dissapointment was evident on his face.

Man of the test seres, VVS Laxman continued from where he left off in the test series. Playing some supremely elegant cover drives and mid wicket leg glances, Laxman raced along to 25, before he let himself down with a loose shot off a rank bad ball from Scott Styris. Laxman pulled the short ball away, only to pick out Kyle Mills.

Indian Captain, Rahul Dravid didn't last too long either, out for 4 to Daniel Vettori. Continuing in the aggressive Indian fashion, Yuvraj Singh and Sachin Tendulkar continued to push the tempo. Yuvraj playing some majestic sweeps and brutal pull shots against the spinners and fast bowlers helped to move the scoreboard along.

With the score at 3/141, the massive cloud cover over the stadium opened, as torrential monsoon rain swamped the ground. The match was officially declared as 'Abandoned' later on in the evening.

Brief Score Summary:

India: 3/141 (Tendulkar 48*, Sehwag 31, Yuvraj 29*, Cairns 1/16, Styris 1/19, Vettori 1/21)

Result: Match Abandoned
