Jones returns

Saturday, August 9 2003

Simon Jones made his eagerly anticipated return to cricket on Wednesday with a match for Glamorgan's second eleven. Having spent the last ten months recovering from the horrific knee ligaments injury that he obtained on the first day of the Ashes series, it was good for fans to see that his tremendous pace is still intact. However, his two four-over spells included a number of no-balls and beamers, including one that forced the Lancashire batsman to retire hurt. He also failed to take a wicket, however he said that it was good to be back with the team playing.

Jones, whose brief international career has been plagued by injury, impressed on Test debut against India with both bat and ball, also took a wicket against Australia, before attempting that infamous slide on the Brisbane outfield. He is targeting a place on the winter tours, starting later this year, a goal which seems realistic, fitness depending, because of the recent retirement of Darren Gough, as well as the poor performances of the fast bowlers in the first two Tests against Australia.
