Srinath Retires

Wednesday, November 12 2003

After 67 Tests and 229 ODIs for India, paceman Javagal Srinath has retired from International Cricket.

Srinath, who took 551 International wickets - 236 of them in the Test Arena at just over 30 a time - has been the spearhead of the often lacklustre Indian pace attack for the last decade, since the retirement of Kapil Dev.

His best display came at Ahmedabad in February 1999, when figures of 5-46 and 8-86 should have been enough to defeat Pakistan if it wasn't for Saeed Anwar's brilliant 188*, and brilliant displays in adversity became his trademark.

After a period where he persisted with unpenetrative back-of-a-length bowling that he just wasn't quick enough to make effective, he matured into a leader of the attack and beneficial influence on the younger pacemen such as Ashish Nehra and Zaheer Khan, with whom he formed arguably India's best pace triumvirate of all time at the 2003 World Cup in South Africa, where he finished with 16 of the trio's 49 wickets at 23.06 each.
