England captain Michael Vaughan scored an impressive 90, but was narrowly unable to prevent his county losing to likely champions Surrey at Headingley. After the visitors were all out for 202, Vaughan and Vic Craven, who scored 47, put on 120 for the fifth wicket, taking Yorkshire to within striking distance. However both batsmen were run out, resulting in a sudden collapse which meant the Phoenix missed out by just two runs. Martin Bicknell proved his fitness by bowling his nine overs for just 21 runs and dismissing Stephen Fleming, while Matthew Hoggard returned, finishing with figures of 1-57. The victory means that Surrey can take the title on Wednesday with victory over Kent.

Second place Gloucestershire also won a thriller, to keep their slim championship hopes open. The C&G champions continued their one-day form by beating Warwickshire by two runs. Young all-rounder Alex Gidman hit 73 off 77 balls as the Gladiators scored 246-6, however the Bears pushed them all the way as Trevor Penney scored an unbeaten 88. He was unable to hit the necessary boundary off the last ball of the match to reach the target.
