Lara shines in Bermuda

Tuesday, September 2 2003

Brian Lara scored a classic 59 to guide his Select XI to a 2-wicket victory in an exhibition match against a Bermuda XI. The Select XI included Test names such as Courtney Browne, Ryan Hinds, Jerome Taylor, Fidel Edwards, Omari Banks and Mervyn Dillon.

The West Indies captain came in at number five in the order after his team had slipped to 5/3. Together with Bermudan guest player, Philip Burgess, 111 runs were added for the fourth wicket.

Earlier in the day-night fixture, the Bermuda XI was dismissed for 161 in 37 overs. Dillon with 3/21 and Fidel Edwards (3/25) did most of the damage. Lara himself chipped in with his leg-spin to take 2/39 in 5 overs.

Lara's trip to Bermuda is meant to repay them for the support given by Bermudians to the West Indies Test team. His presence has definitely been known as he has signed countless autographs, spent four hours doing youth coaching and helped draw a relatively large 3000 spectators to the newly opened National Sports Centre ground to see the exhibition match.
