Leicestershire appointments

Saturday, November 1 2003

Former Leicestershire captain and one of Wisden's 1987 Cricketers of the Year James Whitaker is rejoining the county as Director of Cricket with overall responsibility for all cricket matters. Whitaker, capped by England in 1986 against Australia, scored over 17,000 runs for Leicestershire in a career which lasted from 1983 until 1999.

In addition, former Zimbabwean One-Day International player Gus Mackay has been appointed as Commercial Manager by the Midland county. All-rounder Mackay did not enjoy a particularly auspicious international career, failing to take a wicket and not taking strike in any of his three representative games, but he made headlines last year with a century in just 45 balls for Mashonaland against Matabeleland.
