Red Stripe Bowl : Day 1

Thursday, October 2 2003

ZONE A

Trinidad and Tobago VS. Leewards XI at U.W.I.

Captain Daren Ganga knocked an unbeaten 49 to take his team to victory over the Leewards XI in a rain-affected match. West Indian captain Brian Lara was victim to false start by Ganga when he was run out for 17, to leave T&T at 54/3 chasing 204 for victory.

Earlier in the day, the Trinbagonian bowlers did well to restrict the Leewards batsmen on a wicket which offered very little help. Dillon in particular struggled with the lack of life in the pitch, but he persisted and finished with decent figures of 0/38 off his 10 overs. It was the spin duo of Dave Mohammed (3/31) and Dinanath Ramnarine (2/38) who did the damage for Trinidad and Tobago. For the Leewards XI, allrounder Carl Tuckett topscored with 43. He was supported by Alex Adams (32), Shane Jeffers (28) and promising West Indies allrounder Omari Banks (26 not out). Captain Stuart Williams scored just 9. Also of note is Runako Morton's knock of 20 representing his first innings at regional level since his one year suspension last year during the ICC Champions Trophy.

After T&T reached 92/3 in the chase, the rains came and the players were forced to leave the field. Upon resumption, the score improved to 102/3 off 25 overs, which represented a 13-run lead on what was required.

Leewards XI - 203-6 (50 overs)
(Carl Tuckett 43, Alex Adams 32, Shane Jeffers 28, Omari Banks 26 not out)
(Dave Mohammed 3/31 [10], Dinanath Ramnarine 2/38 [10])

Trinidad & Tobago - 102-3 (25 overs)
(Daren Ganga 49 not out, Dwayne Bravo 17 not out, Brian Lara 17)
(Elsroy Powell 2-26 [5])

ZONE B

Guyana VS. West Indies U-19 at the A.R.G.

Lendl Simmons scored the first century of the 2003 Red Stripe Bowl in a losing cause as the young West Indians failed to chase 252 runs set by Guyana. Shivnarine Chanderpaul played superbly for 66 and was well supported by Ryan Ramdass (62) and Narsingh Deonarine (39) as Guyana reached 252/6 off their allotment of 50 overs. Chanderpaul and Deonarine put on 80 off just 65 balls in a fifth wicket stand but ultimately both batsmen fell to Ravi Rampaul (2/27). West Indies vice-captain scored just 9 runs in the effort.

In reply, the U-19 team reached 238/8 at the close of their innings. Simmons hit an even hundred off 113 balls to lead the charge. However, the next highest score was just 29 (from Assad Fudadin) as Nagamootoo took 4 wickets for 50 runs in his __ overs.

Guyana - 252-6 (50 overs)
(Shivnarine Chanderpaul 66, Ryan Ramdass 62, Narsingh Deonarine 39, Sewnarine Chattergoon 34) (Rishi Bachan 3-44 [10], Ravi Rampaul 2-27 [10])

Windies U-19s - 238-8 (50 overs)
(Lendl Simmons 100, Assad Fudadin 29, Ravi Rampaul 21)
