Brian Murphy calls it quits

Friday, October 10 2003

The procession continues as 26-year-old leg-spinner Brian Murphy has announced his retirement from international cricket. Murphy represents the eighth premature Zimbabwean retiree in this year alone.

In his 11 Tests, Murphy managed 18 wickets at more than 60 apiece. This included 4/55 match figures on debut.

He debuted for Zimbabwe on the 2000 tour of the West Indies following the retirement of Adam Huckle and Paul Strang's hand injury. At the time Murphy was attending the University of Cape Town, awaiting his final exams.

In the 2001/02 season, Murphy captained his country for a brief period with a record of 0-4 in ODI cricket and a draw in his only Test at the helm. With Ray Price in the picture, Murphy would have had to settle for a place in Zimbabwe 'A' side to tour Namibia. Murphy declined as he wished to earn more money playing for his club in England.
