Friday, October 3 2003

ZONE A

Canada VS. the Windward Islands

Canada let go an excellent opportunity to register a win in their Red Stripe Bowl opener. After restricting the Windwards to 196 off their 50 overs, the Canadians collapsed for just 69 runs in 35.4 overs. Canada lost their last 7 wickets for a meagre 13 runs. Former West Indies bowler, Cameron Cuffy bowled 6 overs, taking 1/10.

Darren Sammy (3/16) and Orlanzo Jackson (3/22) managed to do most of the damage, with Ashish Bagai's 24 being the top score for Canada. Earlier, Sunil Dhaniram took 3/15 off his 10 to help restrict the Windwards' batting line-up. Captain Rawl Lewis scored a crucial 59 not out and Romel Currency supported him with 42.

ZONE B

Barbados VS. UWI

Rain once again came into play as Barbados emerged victorious against the UWI team. Bajan Philo Wallace hit 39 out of UWI's 119/1 off 31.4 overs before the rains cut the innings short. Test bowlers Drakes (0/26 [5.3]) and Collymore (0/29 [4]) were not particularly impressive, but ODI capped Hurley bowled his 10 overs for just 20 runs.

Barbados were set a target of 176 off 29 overs and got home with 16 balls to spare. Captain Courtney Browne notched an unbeaten half-century for the Barbados cause, continuing the streak of captains top scoring in crucial situations (Ganga, Lewis, Wallace). Browne was ably supported by disposed West Indies opener, Sherwin Campbell, who notched 48. When Barbados were 106/3 (at the departure of Hinds), UWI looked to be right in the game and would have had a legitimate shot at victory, if Wallace hadn't dropped Reifer twice and Campbell once.

Jamaican spinner Ryan Cunningham led the UWI bowling with 2/19.

UWI XI - 116/1 (31.4 overs)
(Philo Wallace 39, Jason Haynes 35 not out, Jason Parris 33 not out)
(Suleiman Benn 1/19 [6])

Barbados - 176-3 (26.2 overs)
(Courtney Browne 50 not out, Sherwin Campbell 48, Dale Richards 31)(
Ryan Cunningham 2-19 [6])
