Ponting to Somerset

Friday, October 3 2003

Somerset have countered the non-signing of Ian Ward by announcing that Ricky Ponting will be one of their two overseas players for next summer.

After struggling to make runs in 2003, Ponting assures the struggling county of prolific scoring with his penchant for English wickets.

Regular overseas player Jamie Cox's future at the county remains uncertain, with general belief being that he will not return to Taunton - possibly along with Nixon McLean.

Ponting will play for the county for around 6 weeks - half of July and the complete month of August.

At this stage, it is unclear whether he will captain the side.

Meanwhile, Durham have signed disappointing batsman James Bryant from the Sabres.
