Casualty Ward

Monday, September 15 2003

Ian Ward has become the first high-profile exit from Surrey for next season, announcing that he will leave the glamour county.

Ward, who has played 5 Tests for England, is leaving the club in a bid to earn a recall to the English fold. No doubt a county where he will be a star batsman would help his cause rather than a star-studded line-up such as the defending champions.

Alec Stewart , who today admitted he is not sure whether he will play first class cricket again, may join him on the Surrey exodus list at the end of the summer.

Meanwhile, Nottinghamshire batsman Kevin Pietersen is set to leave the struggling county, ironically linked to Surrey.

The South African-born batsman becomes eligible for England in 2004, and will take part in the English Academy this winter.
