Lightning defeat Crusaders

Thursday, August 21 2003

Andrew Strauss hit his first century in one-day cricket, but was unable to prevent his team losing to Lancashire at Old Trafford. The Middlesex Crusaders captain scored 127 at a rate of more than one-a-ball, and was supported predominantly by Ed Joyce, who scored 70, as Middlesex amassed 278-4 from their forty-five overs on a good batting surface. Peter Martin and promising youngster Kyle Hogg took two wickets each.

However Lancashire replied strongly under the lights, as Iain Sutcliffe and Stuart Law put on 155 for the second wicket, racing ahead of Middlesex's comparative run rate.. Law was eventually trapped leg before wicket by Paul Weekes on 78. Sutcliffe fell shortly after, bowled by Jamie Dalrymple having scored 71 from 80 balls. However Carl Hooper, who finished with an unbeaten century, and Mark Chilton came together to take Lightning to the target relatively comfortably.
