Saeed Anwar Retires

Saturday, August 16 2003

Prolific Pakistani batsman Saeed Anwar, holder of ODI Cricket's highest individual score, has announced his retirement from the game at age 34.

The opening batsman's career had largely stalled since the tragic death of his daughter two years ago.

A devoted Muslim, Anwar played 55 Tests and 247 ODI matches.

He reached his finest hour in 1997 when he made One-Day International crickets highest-ever score of 194 against traditional rivals India.

The left-hander was gifted with a rare grace at the crease, culminating in the ultimate appraisal of being potentially Pakistan's best batsman since the great Javed Miandad.

Sadly, however, his name was dragged through the match-fixing scandal, creating a slur that damaged his reputation as a cricketer.

His final international hurrah was World Cup 2003, where again he tore apart the Indian attack for a majestic century, his last on the international stage.

While not the best of fielders Anwar will be remembered for his silky stroke play and, in later years, his large beard.

Pakistan will name their squad for the Test series against Bangladesh today.
