Bicknell and Kabir called up

Tuesday, August 19 2003

Martin Bicknell and Kabir Ali have been called up to the England squad for the fourth Test against South Africa at Headingley which starts on Thursday. The additions to the squad come after Steve Harmison picked up an injury in England's victory in the third Test. Kabir Ali, who was in the squad for the one-day internationals was expected by many to be called up after a number of impressive performances in domestic cricket with Worcestershire. However the Surrey veteran, who has won only two of the hundreds of caps owned by his Oval team-mates, was a surprise recall, having played his last match ten years ago. The 34 year old has been prolific in county cricket for many years, and has taken 40 wickets at 27.77 this season so far. He has also scored 421 runs at 52.62. Chairman of Selectors David Graveney stated that Bicknell was one of the unluckiest players as far as Test appearances were concerned, considering his impressive record in domestic cricket.

Glen Chapple has been left out after his inclusion in the last squad, which many feel was due to the swing conditions at Trent Bridge. If Bicknell plays, he will bring experience to the young attack, as England look to take a lead in the series.
