Surrey v Glamorgan, Whitgift, Croydon

Surrey effectively ended Glamorgan's chances of picking up the NCL Division 1 Championship today with a comprehensive victory over the Welsh side at the Whitgift School ground, Croydon today.

Winning the toss and batting, the home side soon lost slugger-in-chief Ally Brown for just 14, bowled by Davies with 23 on the board. This brought Mark Ramprakash to the wicket and as he has done so often this season, he anchored the Lions innings perfectly, putting on 70 with Ian Ward and then a whirlwind 120 in conjunction with Graham Thorpe.

Ramprakash was finally dismissed for 101, the first of three Jimmy Maher wickets, but there was to be no relief from the onslaught as far as Glamorgan were concerned as skipper Adam Hollioake smashed 41 in 16 hectic balls to help lift his side to a massive 298-5.

Robert Croft soon lost opening partner Maher as Glamorgan set about their reply with gusto, Croft and Mike Powell taking a particular liking to the bowling of Martin Bicknell. The introduction of Ormond accounted for Croft with the total on 50 but Matthew Maynard added a degree of stability, adding 87 for the third wicket with Powell who went on to make 60.

Maynard (41) and David Hemp (30) continued to take the fight to the home side but none of the Glamorgan middle order was able to go on to make the major contribution needed under the circumstances. Adam Hollioake brought himself on to bowl at the death and his uncanny knack of taking wickets in limited overs cricket was ably demonstrated once more as Glamorgan succumbed to 240 all out.

Surrey 298-5 (Ramprakash 101, Thorpe 77*, Maher 3-29)
beat
Glamorgan 240 (Powell 60, Hollioake 3-22, Ormond 2-45) by 58 runs

Yorkshire v Worcestershire, Scarborough

Yorkshire edged out Worcestershire in a low-scoring affair at Queens, Scarborough today.

Worcestershire won the toss and elected to bat but they were rocked early by the opening blast of Steven Kirby who removed Vikram Solanki and Graeme Hick with successive deliveries to leave the visitors vulnerable on 16-2.

Skipper Ben Smith tried to hold the ship together with a dogged 56 but with all the Yorkshire bowlers giving nothing away, runs were very difficult to come by. Apart from Smith, only Steve Rhodes (35), David Leatherdale (23), Nantie Hayward (11) and Anurag Singh (10) made it into double figures.

Richard Dawson and Kirby shared six of the wickets to fall with Tim Bresnan chipping in with a couple of his own as Worcestershire stuttered to 170 all out.

Yorkshire themselves found the going just as difficult, losing wickets at regular intervals throughout the afternoon. Matthew Mason bowled a splendidly economical spell for Worcestershire, conceding just 15 runs from his 9 overs and in the process picking up the wicket of Fleming.

Yorkshire owed much to opening bat Michael Wood who compiled a patient 60 to hold the top of the innings together, then a few lusty blows by Bresnan took to home side to the brink of victory before he became the third of Nantie Hayward's victims as Yorkshire eventually ran out victorious with three overs and three wickets to spare.

Yorkshire 171-7 (Wood 60, Hayward 3-35, Ali 3-59)
beat
Worcestershire 170 (Smith 56, Dawson 3-26, Kirby 3-27)
by 3 wickets
