Lehmann, McGrath Blow

Tuesday, November 25 2003

Australia will again field a below full-strength side against India, with Darren Lehmann and Glenn McGrath unavailable for the beginning of the home test series.

Lehmann's immediate playing future now sits in limbo, with the South Australian captain's achilles injury forcing him to remain on the sidelines until at least January.

After having only just cemented his place in the test squad, Lehmann faces an uphill battle to wear the Baggy Green again following the news he will miss the full series.

McGrath, meanwhile, today announced that he will miss at least the opening 2 Tests of the 4-match series. He hopes to be fit for Boxing Day in Melbourne.

Brett Lee, at this stage, also remains an unlikely starter.

Due to the injuries, Simon Katich, Brad Williams and Andy Bichel are set to add to their Test appearance record, although Nathan Bracken and Michael Kasprowicz may push Williams for a place in the XI.

Jason Gillespie is a likely starter following a successful return to domestic cricket.

Assuming Lee is ruled out, the likely squad is:

Justin Langer
Ricky Ponting

Simon Katich
Adam Gilchrist

Stuart MacGill
Nathan Bracken.
