SC: CD v Cant (17-20 March)

Saturday, March 22 2003

Some stubborn batting from Canterbury against Central Districts in Napier saw the Cantabs notch up only their second win of the tournament yesterday.

With the tournament now at a close, the final placing for Central Districts is fifth (out of six) with 22 points, whilst Canterbury are officially the wooden spoons of the tournament this season ending up with a disappointing 16 points.

Central Districts first innings was a show of batting brilliance by three of its key players - with centuries coming from Sulzberger ,Ryder and How. CD eventually declared at a handsome 542/4, setting the inconsistent Canterbury batting line-up a mammoth challenge.

In response to the challenge, only a couple of Canterbury's batters really fired, with a fine 111 from Stead, and a healthy 63 from Broom. Central District's Michael Mason 4/40 helped see Canterbury declare at 290/8.

Central Districts second innings was unquestionably short, with only 30 overs being bowled before Central declared at 109/3 with Taylor making 56.

This gave Canterbury a target of 362 runs to win the match. The Canterbury batting was much more thorough in its second innings, with most of the players being able to contribute well to the score. Stewart (68), Papps (39) and Fulton (91) were the main contributors to the innings, whilst Wiseman (38) and Donkers (29) steered the side to victory.
