Vettori Considers County

Sunday, March 30 2003

New Zealand's number one spinner, Daniel Vettori, is keen to play county cricket this season. He has had informal discussions with Warwickshire, and will hear within the next week and a half whether he is officially wanted.

Shane Bond is already signed up for the county and will arrive in England after his Black Caps duties in Sri Lanka and India.

The main hurdle which Vettori will face is New Zealand Cricket's blessing. Vettori's history of back problems worries NZC. He will be assessed by a medical team and then the decision will be up to NZC chief execuitive Martin Snedden.

Vettori hasn't had any problems lately however his back hasn't really been tested during the summer at all. He is aware that he may have a heavy workload in the upcoming tours to the subcontinent.

Despite his back, Vettori is itching to play county cricket.

"If the opportunity does come I'd jump at it – playing county cricket is something I've always wanted to do," Vettori said.

He also mentioned that if he wasn't wanted by Warwickshire he would hope to be picked up by another county.
