WI Lose Hooper

Tuesday, April 8 2003

Former West Indies captain, Carl Hooper withdrew from West Indies consideration for the upcoming series against the Australians. In a statement made this morning, the senior batsman stated that he would prefer that another, younger batsman got an opportunity.

This opens up a spot, possibly for young Devon Smith to get his debut in Guyana on Thursday. Smith is very much the most accomplished of the three uncapped players in the provisional 14 for the 1st Test.

The announcement all but confirms Hooper's pending retirement. Hooper has represented the Windies for more than a decade and, although he has not achieved his apparent potential, he has had a more than useful career.

Hooper played 102 Test matches with 5762 runs at 36.46 per innings. He scored 13 hundreds and 27 half centuries, with his highest score of 233 coming against India last year. In ODI's, he scored 5761 runs in 227 matches at 35.34 per innings. A top score of 113 not out caps his 7 ODI centuries and 29 fifties.

With the ball, he picked up 307 International wickets (114 Test; 193 ODI) and took 115 catches is Tests and 120 in ODI's.
