ZCU: Boycott "hurt" Zimbabwe

Tuesday, April 1 2003

In what could be one of the biggest displays of hypocracy by a Cricketing Nation for some time, the Zimbabwe Cricket Union have claimed that England's boycott of the World Cup match "hurt" the country.

"We were hurt by their non-arrival and there was some ill feeling. We gave every assurance about security and we felt let down. We don't believe that they were justified. We thought it was the wrong decision. England have learned from the experience as well and they expressed regret for not fulfilling their fixture here.

I'm sure they don't want to repeat that. England are important to us and we are important to England. We are always looking at the cricket issues and we think we made the right decision (to tour England)", said ZCU spokesman Vince Hogg.

Let's get things straight here. The ZCU is nothing more than a puppet of Mugabe's despicable regime - look who its president is if you need any confirmation - and there was one winner and one winner alone from the boycott, as it gave Zimbabwe a wholly undeserved Super Six place and the corresponding money.

TV pictures worldwide have shown the blatant attempts at vote-rigging in Harare by-elections, and the grotesque beatings given out to (opposition) MDC supporters for simply daring to oppose Mugabe's ZANU-PF. But the world's eyes are elsewhere.

England's handling of the issue left much to be desired, but to suggest that "cricket people were hurt" is a display of head-burying of grand proportions.

There's a hell of a lot more people being hurt a hell of a lot more badly day in and day out by Government thugs - get your own house in order before criticising others, or grow some morals before you expect to be treated with respect by the rest of the World.
