Akhtar ruled out of Asia Cup

Friday, June 4 2004

Shoaib Akhtar has been ruled out of the forthcoming Asia Cup tournament to rest his rib injury.

Akhtar, who had to undergo a medical investigation last month to prove his injury, had picked it up during the third Test against India at Rawalpindi.

Akhtar has since been playing county cricket off and on at Durham. But after Monday's Totesport game against Derbyshire where he picked up four wickets, he said that he was "very much available" for Pakistan's national side, as he has regained full fitness.

Wasim Bari, chairman of selectors for Pakistan, however said, "We have received directives that Shoaib should not be considered for the Asia Cup to allow him to recover."

The Asia Cup will be played between six nations (Hong Kong and UAE being the non-Test playing ones) from July 16 in Sri Lanka.
