ZCU Sack Rebels

Tuesday, May 11 2004

Zimbabwean cricket reached its lowest ebb as the ZCU today sacked all 15 rebel players for 'breach of contract'.

The players were due to return to training last Friday yet following their non-attendance, the board felt termination of the contracts was a viable punishment.

In a distressing twist for the players, they had only hours earlier agreed to return to training as a gesture of goodwill in the hope that a resolution could be reached within the near future. Needless to say, this will not be forthcoming following the decision of the board - hopefully prompting some much-needed intervention from the ICC.

A media statement from the ZCU discussed how players would still be considered for national selection. Yet whether they choose to accept a place in the squad remains to be seen, and in judging the current climate looms unlikely.

Zimbabwe's current national side - a shadow of what it potentially could be if all players were available - were recently smashed 5-0 in an ODI series by Sri Lanka and are facing a 1-0 deficit in the Test series following a trouncing in the first Test match.

The 15 rebels stand as:

Andy Blignaut
Gary Brent
Stuart Carlisle
Charles Coventry
Sean Ervine
Gavin Ewing
Neil Ferreira
Grant Flower
Travis Friend
Trevor Gripper
Raymond Price
Barney Rogers
Richard Sims
Heath Streak
Craig Wishart.
