Magoffin Moves West; Griffith Stays

Wednesday, May 12 2004

Perennial Queensland squad member Steve Magoffin has ended ties with his state, choosing to pool his talent in Perth for the next 2 seasons as Adam Griffith elected to stay in his native Tasmania for summer 2004/05.

Eyeing an opening following the retirements of Jo Angel and Paul Wilson, Magoffin - who sits behind Andrew Bichel, Michael Kasprowicz, Ashley Noffke, Joe Dawes, Mitchell Johnson, Scott Brant and Damien MacKenzie in the list of Queensland fast bowlers - will join former Queenslander Ben Edmondson as a Western Warrior.

Despite being a consistent performer for Queensland's second XI side and a Commonwealth Bank Cricket Academy graduate, his career has yet to enter the first-class arena. In announcing his move, the lanky right-armer sighted seam movement and bounce as his strengths - both ideal ingredients for success at the WACA ground in Perth.

Meanwhile, Tasmania yesterday were buoyed by the news that Australia 'A' paceman Adam Griffith elected to sign on for a further 2 seasons.

Already damaged by the loss of key players Shane Watson and Gerard Denton the Tigers saw Griffith as a priority signing. Despite a mixed 2003/04, in which he made his Australia 'A' debut but struggled for a regular place in the Tigers attack, Griffith looms large as one of the most promising pacemen on the domestic circuit.

In other domestic news, Mathew Inness is seeking clarification from Cricket Victoria on their plans for the future before deciding whether he will continue with the Pura Cup champions in 2004/05. The Victorians have already enlisted John Taylor and Gerard Denton for next summer, leaving pace bowling places at a premium at the MCG.
