Murali to retire after 2007 WC

Tuesday, May 11 2004

Controversial Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has announced he intends to retire on a high and hopefully for him a second Sri Lankan World Cup victory in the 2007 World Cup as his swan song from the game.

Murali recently overtook West Indian great Courtney Walsh's 519 Test wickets against Zimbabwe in Harare in which he took match figures of 8-45 in Sri Lanka's innings and 240 run win inside three days.

Murali who now has 521 Test wickets explained his decision to retire after the 2007 World Cup: "I want to play till the next World Cup and try to win it and go off on a high note when I am retiring. The world record means a lot to me and for Sri Lanka, but winning the World Cup in 1996, I would say, was the biggest achievement of my career. The World Cup was something different. You can't forget that easily. It was tremendous. It is bigger than my individual performance in Harare."

Murali's new world record is a brief highlight for him and his country since March when he has had his doosra investigated by the University of Western Australia (UWA) after it got reported by ICC match referee Chris Board.

Shane Warne who has 517 Test wickets is due to play against Zimbabwe in two Tests, the race is on to become the leading wicket taker of all-time.
