County Championship Division 2
Day 3 - 9th May 2004

Durham 339
Essex 241 for 7 (Hussain 70, Davies 3 for 19)

Nasser Hussain, opening the batting for his county, led the way as Essex just about kept in touch at Durham. However, most of his colleagues got our after getting a start, and Durham should still secure a handy first innings lead. Mark Davies was the pick of the bowlers, but it is unlikely that he and his colleagues will have enough time to win the game tomorrow.

Hampshire 419 for 9 dec (Pothas 131*)
Derbyshire 279 for 8 (Rogers 87, Bassano 53, Welch 40))

Nik Pothas' undefeated hundred took Hampshire to an imposing first innings total, and Hampshire must have fancied their chances of blowing away the visitors' fragile batting to set up another win. Instead, after losing four early wickets, Derbyshire fought back pretty well. Chris Rogers led the way, followed by Bassano and Welch, as they closed within 130 of Hampshire with two wickets still standing. A draw now seems the likeliest outcome.

Glamorgan 274
Nottinghamshire 287 for 6 (Warren 97, Pietersen 70, Hussey 55, Jones 3 for 79)

Notts' solid batting line-up managed to pass the Glamorgan first innings score by the close of play. Russ Warren led the way with an impressive knock, although he will be disappointed to have fallen just short of a well-deserved hundred. Kevin Pietersen and David Hussey made sure that his efforts weren't wasted, but it's unlikely that Notts will have time to force a win tomorrow. For Glamorgan, Simon Jones was the pick of the bowlers.
