Tillakaratne steps down

Monday, March 29 2004

Hashan Tillakaratne has stepped down as the Sri Lankan Test captain, after his team lost the third and final Test Match against Australia in Colombo (report to be posted here at CricketWeb.net within a short while), and thus eventually losing the series 3-0.

Tillakaratne took over the mantle, after Sanath Jayasuriya stepped down as captain from both forms of the game, following the 2003 World Cup. However, his record as the skipper is nothing to brag about, with just one Test win against England last winter.

However, the team's poor performance isn't the only aspect that has lead to Tillakaratne's decision. His batting after taking over the captainship suffered too, for he wan't able to produce any exceptional scores since, and was criticized of an over-cautious approach.

Sri Lankan one-day international captain Marvan Atapattu is expected to take the Test captaincy.
