Nehemiah Perry hangs up his boots

Thursday, April 1 2004

Veteran offspinner, Nehemiah Perry has announced his retirement from First Class cricket. At 35 years old, Perry played what turns out to be his final match at domestic level, the 2004 Carib Beer Series Final - a loss to Barbados.

In his 98 FC games, Perry has served Jamaica and the West Indies with great heart, taking 299 wickets over that time at an average of 25.04 apiece. In Test cricket, he played just four Tests and took 10 wickets at 44.60 each. His best performance is recorded as 5 for 70 on debut against Australia in the 1999 matchup - an effort which helped inspire West Indian victory. In FC cricket, he has 8 for 45 as his career best.

Perry also played 21 One Day Internationals for the Caribbean side and had better success in that form, accumulating 20 wickets at 39.20 with an ecomony of 4.96 and best bowling of 3 for 45.

With the bat, Perry was certainly no slouch, and he finishes with a commendable 2,592 FC runs at an average of 20.09 and lone century - 160 against the Windward Islands.
