NatWest Series Match#2
New Zealand vs. West Indies
Edgbaston, Birmingham
June 26, 2004

New Zealand missed out on a win against West Indies in the second match of the NatWest series as rain abandoned play, at a stage when they needed only 43 runs off 44 balls, in a shortened match at Edgbaston on Thursday.

Persistent morning rain meant that the match couldn't get under way until 3 hours past the original scheduled time, the allocated overs resultantly reduced to 35, and eventually 21. New Zealand, however, made a match of it, by dashing their way to 97-2 chasing a revised target of 140 as per the Duckworth Lewis Method, before the final drizzle ruined possibility of a finish to the match.

Earlier, West Indies managed to reach 122-4 in their 21 overs, thanks to a cameo by Brian Lara, which included 23 runs off a single Jacob Oram over, after the openers couldn't get off to a blazing start required for such format of the game. Lara was dismissed is a bizarre way though, hitting his own stumps while attempting a flamboyant backward-facing shot.

The opening match of the series had been enitrely washed out, without a ball being bowled. The next match, the last one of the first round of a total of three to be played as qualifiers for the final between the three participating sides, will be played today between West Indies and England at Trent Bridge.
