Rhodes to retire at season end

Wednesday, April 21 2004

Worcestershire and former England wicket-keeper Steve Rhodes has said that he will retire at the end of the 2004 English county season.

Rhodes, nicknamed 'Bumpy', debuted for the county in 1985 and since then has appeared in 346 County Championship games.

The 39-year old veteran said, "My aim during my last professional season is to approach it with the same enthusiasm and effort that I did in 1985. Winning trophies were the highlights but the friendships I have gained with playing colleagues, staff, members and supporters is the real bonus."

Rhodes is expected to work out something with the county authorities after the season, which will allow him to stay at New Road, presumably in a coaching capacity.
