Lancashire set their stall out

Saturday, April 24 2004

Lancashire completed a comprehensive 10 wicket victory over Sussex on Day 3 of the current Division 1 round of Championship games, whilst Worcestershire took control at Canterbury and the game at the Oval remains on a knife-edge.

Kent vs. Worcestershire

Matt Mason struck early to remove David Fulton, and from then on, it was the away side's day, as Nadeem Malik picked up 5 wickets whilst Kent lost 7 wickets for 56 before a 10th wicket stand of 35 left them 112 behind on first innings.

This 112 was added to rapidly by the Worcestershire top order, as 316 runs came in only 60 overs, Graeme Hick (89 from 79 balls) and Ben Smith (78 from 60 balls) being particularly brutal, whilst 23 year old Stephen Moore anchored the innings with his first century in First Class Cricket.

Kent were set 429 to win in a day and 13 overs, and the 13 overs saw Mason collect 2 wickets to leave them in a precarious position overnight.

WORCESTERSHIRE 401 (Solanki 84, Peters 76, Extras 63, Bichel 50, Rhodes 42*, Sheriyar 5-94)
KENT 289 (Fulton 107, Walker 70, Tredwell 51*, Malik 5-88, Mason 4-55)
WORCESTERSHIRE 316-2 (Moore 108*, Hick 89, Smith 78*)
KENT 35-2 (Mason 2-14)

Surrey vs. Middlesex

Middlesex continued to fight-back, and will need 265 more runs with 10 wickets intact on the final day.

Resuming on 176-2, nightwatchman Paul Hutchison fell quickly, but in spite of 7 wickets shared by the overseas pairing of Azhar Mahmood and Saqlain Mushtaq, the Surrey lead was restricted to 93.

The bowlers then did their job in reducing Surrey to 71-5 before a blistering 77 ball innings from Azhar Mahmood combined with a more sedate Mark Ramprakash to add 113 runs in less than an hour and a half. However, Mahmood's dismissal led to a collpase that left a target of 297, of which Sven Koenig and Ben Hutton had scored 32 by the close.

SURREY 418 (Hollioake 106, Newman 86, Salisbury 77, Keegan 5-138)
MIDDLESEX 325 (Shah 92, Hutton 78, Joyce 45, Azhar Mahmood 4-96, Saqlain Mushtaq 3-71)
SURREY 203 (Azhar Mahmood 70, Ramprakash 68, Hayward 4-41, Keegan 3-47)
MIDDLESEX 32-0

Sussex vs. Lancashire

Lancashire cruised to a 3 day victory that means the Champions have only a draw to show for their first 2 matches.

Dominic Cork was the bowling hero, as he took 5 wickets as Sussex collapsed from 90-1 to 96-5, and then from 153-5 to 163 all out to leave a target of just 24 which Mark Chilton and Iain Sutcliffe knocked off in just over a quarter of an hour.

SUSSEX 195 (Montgomerie 60*, Mahmood 3-41, Cork 3-61)
LANCASHIRE 335 (Law 171*, Sutcliffe 45, Mushtaq Ahmed 4-88, Mohammad Akram 3-79)
SUSSEX 163 (Cork 5-58)
LANCASHIRE 24-0.
