Kent beat the rain to lead Div 1

Tuesday, April 20 2004

The rain over the weekend went a long way to preventing any results in most of the Division 1 games. Kent and Gloucestershire each forfeited an innings after the captains had agreed that the visitors would be set a target of 300+ on the final day. Kent easily reached their target and they lead the division after the first round of matches.

Gloucestershire (3 points) 301 for 7 declared and second innings forfeited
Kent (16 points) first innings forfeited and 302 for 3

Kent won by seven wickets, following to innings of 118* and 104* from Rob Key and Michael Carberry respectively.

Lancashire (12 points) 504 for 9 declared
Northants (8 points) 298 and 113 for 1

Match drawn. Usman Afzaal and David Sales scored half centuries to hold the championship favourites at bay. Gary Keedy was the pick of the bowlers.

Surrey (10 points) 304 and 254 for 9
Sussex (12 points) 493

Match drawn. Sussex looked set to win after reducing Surrey to 107 for 7, but 86* from Scott Newman, well supported once again by the lower order, saved the game for the hosts. Mohammad Akram was the pick of the bowlers.

Middlesex (12 points) 432 for 8 and 54 for 2
Warwickshire (9 points) 317

Match drawn. Half centuries from Mark Wagh and Ben Trott removed any chance of Middlesex forcing the follow-on, and the game was easily saved.
