Miandad sacked as Pakistan coach

Thursday, June 17 2004

Pakistan have sacked Javed Miandad as their national team's coach, and replaced him with former South Africa coach Bob Woolmer.

Miandad's release is largely a result of Pakistan's dismal series loss, both in One-Dayers and Tests against arch rivals India, at home.

Miandad, who had been contracted with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) until 2005, had faced severe criticism following the conclusion of the historic series. He, however had made it clear that if subjected to such ridicule again, he would be more than happy to step down.

Speaking at a press conference today, PCB chief Shahryar Khan said, "His contract has been terminated. We offered him to serve as national cricket advisor, but he has declined." Justifying the decision, he added, "I feel sorry for Miandad, but the India defeat did show up some flaws in the side and lack of morale and we need to invest in the future."

Miandad has been replaced by former England batsman Bob Woolmer, who is currently serving as International Cricket Council's (ICC) high performance director. He will join the Pakistani camp on July 2, when they start their preparations for the six-nation Asia Cup scheduled for the latter half of the month, in Sri Lanka.
