New Zealand upset by Derbyshire

Thursday, June 17 2004

New Zealand's first one-day warm-up prior to the forthcoming Natwest Series ended in defeat by the margin of 4 wickets at Derby today.

Derbyshire won the toss and asked the tourists to bat, with Stephen Fleming and a strangely subdued Nathan Astle forming the opening pairing.

Astle struggled to make any impression, lasting half an hour yet managing only a couple before he edged Graeme Welch to Luke Sutton behind the sticks. When Hamish Marshall departed, run out for 8, New Zealand were slightly uncomfortable on 59-2.

Fleming and Scott Styris pummeled the Derbyshire bowlers in a third-wicket partnership worth 117 before Styris fella to Mohamed Sheikh for 56 before the in-form Fleming progressed to his hundred, an innings which contained 13 boundaries.

When Fleming fell, leg before wicket to Ant Botha for 102, Craig McMillan worked the ball around to great effect before he went for 43, the first of two wickets for paceman Mohammad Ali before New Zealand eventually closed on 258-7

Derbyshire too struggled early on, losing the hard-hitting Nicholas Walker for just 4 in Ian Butler's first over, and when Jonathon Moss was bowled by Daryl Tuffey for 30, the home side had been reduced to 44-2.

Chris Bassano contented himself with the sheet anchor role, batting well over an hour for just 18, then skipper Luke Sutton joined Hassan Adnan in the middle and the pair set about the New Zealanders in a partnership worth exactly 100 before Sutton was caught by Marshall off the bowling of James Franklin for 41.

Hassan Adnan ended undefeated on 113, an innings which contained 10 boundaries and the only six of the day as Derbyshire eventually knocked off the runs required with eight balls to spare. Of particular concern to the tourists will be the 6 no-balls and the 13 wides conceded by the depleted attack.

New Zealand 258-7
Fleming 102, Styris 56
Derbyshire 259-6
Hassan Adnan 113*
