Chanderpaul powers WI past Sussex

Monday, June 21 2004

Explosive knocks of 71 not out (58 balls) and 57 (44 balls) from Shiv Chanderpaul and Chris Gayle respectively wrapped up a quick run chase for the West Indies in their Natwest warmup versus Sussex. The West Indian bowling backfired for the second consecutive game, allowing 292/6 in 50 overs, but rain meant that the target was reduced to 181 from 23 overs.

Murray Goodwin (90 off 94 balls) and Tim Ambrose (79 not out off 87 balls) were the inspiration for the big Sussex total, Ravi Rampaul taking 2/59 from his 10.

In the chase, Devon Smith (0) fell to the second ball he faced and Ramnaresh Sarwan (1) lasted just 4 balls - 12/2. Batting at four, Chanderpaul and Gayle put on a swift 83. On the fismissal of the latter, Ricardo Powell exploded for 18 runs from 9 balls (2 fours and a six) but was unfortunately run out.

Brian Lara (15 not out) joined Chanderpaul and was not out at the end, facing just 11 balls in a partnership of 68. James Kirtley's figures of 3-2-4-2 were by far the pick for Sussex.
