Rafique and rain frustrate Windies

Sunday, May 30 2004

Rain and Rafique partnered each other on a very frustrating day two for the hosts West Indies in the first Test between the two teams, in St. Lucia. A maiden Test century from left-arm spinner, Mohammad Rafique, served to brighten the day after rain ensured that play did not start until after lunch.

Beginning the day on 17 not out and Bangladesh on 278/7, Rafique met stumps at 103 not out, with the overall score at 406/9. Fellow overnight batsman, Mohammad Ashraful (81) added some 16 runs to his overnight score, facing up to some disciplined West Indian bowling. Indeed, in contrast to the day one showing, the West Indies' seamers were sharp and pacy on the unresponsive Beausejour track, albeit with little success.

When Ashraful departed, trapped in front by Lawson, the score read 337/8. Tapash Baisya (9) hung around with Rafique long enough for 33 more runs to be added, then gave a return catch to Sarwan. Rafique played aggressively all day and brought up his hundred off what proved the final ball of the day, cut away for a boundary. The rain then brought an early halt to play.

In all Rafique has thus far faced 138 balls, hit 11 fours and 2 sixes.

Match Summary:

Bangladesh 1st innings 406/9 (131.1 overs)
(Habibul Bashar 113, Mohammad Rafique 103 not out, Mohammad Ashraful 81)
(RR Sarwan 3/51, PT Collins 3/83, JJC Lawson 2/66)
