Maurice Odumbe hires top lawyer

Thursday, May 6 2004

Former Kenyan captain and star all rounder Maurice Odumbe, has hired Ishan Kapila, one of Kenya's top criminal lawyer in his fight to prove his innocence and to clear his name filed against him by the International Cricket Council for allegations of match fixing. The case is due to begin on May 19 in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi and to be presided by Zimbabwean judge Ahmed Ebrahim.

Mr Kapila's father Achhrro defended Jomo Kenyatta in the pre-indepence trail in 1953, when the British Government accused of being one of the leaders in the Mau Mau freedom movement.

Odumbe stands accused of accepting payments from at least Mumbai bookmaker in 2002, to convince his team mates to under preform in matches. Odume is arguably one of the best, if not the best all-rounder among the non Test playing nations and is the face of Kenyan cricket, along with Steve Tikolo.

Odumbe faces a life ban if found guilty and will certainly be a blow for the development of Kenyan cricket.
