CC2: Somerset and Derbyshire in the Runs

Chelmsford: Essex v Somerset
Bowler and Burns pile on the misery

Chelmsford finally produced a weather interruption-free day's cricket and Somerset's top order cashed in on a good batting pitch as they accelerated the run rate to claim maximum batting points. Resuming overnight on 87-1, Matt Wood became Danish Kaneria's first victim of the season when the Pakistani leg-spinner bowled him for 34. Jamie Cox did no better, only making 22 before Will Jefferson caught him off the bowling of Zimbabwean-Australian Scott Brant.

At 168-3, the match was evenly poised before the visitors' skipper Michael Burns joined veteran Peter Bowler, and the two men added 232 unbroken runs for the fourth wicket in better than even time, before the declaration came at 400-3, the moment the fifth point was attained, Burns hitting 124* and Bowler 187*, his 44th First-Class century. Essex managed a watchful 12 overs' worth of reply, England hopefuls Will Jefferson and Alistair Cook both unbeaten with the hosts on 28-0.

Derby: Derbyshire v Durham
Rogers knows his Onions

An unbeaten 151* from Western Australian Chris Rogers was the highlight of the first effective day's play at the County Ground as he guided his side to 311-4 at stumps.

A promising morning's effort from seamer Graham Onions, accounting for Andrew Gait and Steve Stubbings on his Championship debut had reduced Derby to 103-2, but this only brought Rogers and Hasan Adnan (72) together, who crafted a 152-run partnership before West Indian spinner Gareth Breese bowled the Pakistani batsman.

Liam Plunkett removed Chris Bassano, the other wicket to fall in the evening session, before Luke Sutton accompanied Rogers through to the close of play.

Derbyshire 311-4
CJL Rogers 151*, G Onions 2-63

Nottingham: Nottinghamshire v Yorkshire
Dawson leads the rearguard

Former Exeter University and England off-spinner Richard Dawson engineered a determined tail-end fightback from Yorkshire at Trent Bridge after the hosts' pace attack had reduced them to 151-8.

Australian pairing Darren Lehmann (62) and Ian Harvey (35) both contributed breezy innings before falling, Greg Smith taking three wickets and Tykes reject Ryan Sidebottom two.

However, Dawson was not to be bowed as his obdurate 74*, well supported by numbers 10 and 11 in Chris Silverwood and John Blain, as they combined to add 95 runs for the last two wickets and frustrate Nottinghamshiree, who will be disappointed to have failed to finish off the visitors' innings.

Yorkshire 246-9
RKJ Dawson 74*, GJ Smith 3-66

Southampton: Hampshire v Leicestershire
