Pak-SL ODI series to be cancelled

Friday, May 7 2004

A three-match One-Day International series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, slated to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in the last week of May, is on the verge of cancellation because of lack of sponsorship.

According to the Pakistan daily The Nation, the Malaysian Cricket Council (MCC), despite paying US $50,000 to each team, and selling the telecast rights to ESPN Star, has not been able to gather enough corporates, who would be willing to sponsor the series.

The first match has been scheduled for May 27, however as a result of the current uncertainty, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) haven't named a squad for play.

Malaysia have hosted two major cricketing events in the past - the ICC Trophy in 1997 and the Commonwealth Games the next year. However, since then the country's cricket has been troubled by poor infrastructure.
