UCCE Game Round-up

Sunday, April 11 2004

6 UCCE games started today as counties returned to action for the 2004 season.

Cambridge UCCE vs. Essex

Cambridge fielded 4 debutants, but it was Will Jefferson who stole the show as he hit 144 from 199 balls before retiring.

In an unaccustomed role, Aftab Habib shared the opening duties, hitting a half century, as only spinner Simon Marshall made an impact for the students, finishing with 3-42 from 20.5 overs before Ronnie Irani made a positive move in declaring at 292-5.

This move was rewarded as Adrian McCoubrey picked up 2 cheap wickets before the close.

ESSEX 292-5 (Jefferson 144, Habib 54, Bopara 40*, Marshall 3-42)
CAMBRIDGE UCCE 19-2 (McCoubrey 2-2)

Durham vs. Durham UCCE

The county side batted first, and several made starts (6 of the top 9 getting to 30), but only keeper Andy Pratt made a half century as Lee Daggett defied his previous career record of 3 wickets at 105 apiece in taking 8-94.

The final score of 311 allowed Durham 10 overs against the opposition and Graham Onions managed to nip one out before the close on his debut.

DURHAM 311 (A Pratt 67, G Pratt 45, Daggett 8-94)
DURHAM UCCE 24-1

Oxford UCCE vs. Surrey

Surrey dominated proceedings in their first game under the new captain.

There were 3 centurions in Scott Newman, Justin Benning and the customary effort from Mark Ramprakash - whilst Ali Brown was well set at the close as runs came at just under 5 an over all day.

SURREY 452-5 (Benning 128, Ramprakash 113, Newman 100, Munday 3-87)

Somerset vs. Loughborough UCCE

The big news here was the return to action for Andy Caddick, the veteran seamer bowling 22.5 overs in the day for 2 wickets in the first step on his attempt to force himself back into the England side.

That aside, it was a fairly innocuous day, as only Chris Nash made it to 50 for one of the more experienced UCCE teams.

LOUGHBOROUGH UCCE 260-7 (Nash 54*, Adams 47)

Worcestershire vs. Cardiff UCCE

This was a one sided day in a 12-a-side game.

The students were put in, and lasted nearly 60 overs, but only scored 118 as Nadeem Malik destoyed the top order.

In reply the county only had 16 overs, but the openers were well in control.

CARDIFF UCCE 118 (Malik 6-41)
WORCESTERSHIRE 44-0

Yorkshire v Bradford/Leeds UCCE

Another new county captain here, and Craig White led from the front as he opened the batting and scored a half century.

It was one way traffic through the day as Chris Taylor hit his maiden first class century and then keeper Simon Guy hammered 90 from 81 balls - the innings being finally terminated at 401 from only 75 overs.

Runs were nowhere near as free-flowing in reply as John Blain and Vic Craven picked up a pair of wickets apiece in the 19 overs left at the end of the day.

YORKSHIRE 401 (Taylor 150, Guy 90, White 53, Jones 4-58)
BRADFORD/LEEDS UCCE 57-5 (Blain 2-22, Craven 2-2)
