Waqar calls it a day

Tuesday, April 13 2004

Former Pakistan captain and the smartest exponent of the prodigous reverse swing, Waqar Younis, has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

Waqar was sacked as captain after Pakistan's dismal showing at the 2003 World Cup, and was subsequently dropped from the side. Since then, Waqar hasn't been picked in a Pakistani side.

Waqar's last hope of return came ahead of the recent Indian tour to Pakistan, however the selectors over-ruled him for younger bowlers.

During a career spanning 15 years, Waqar took 416 wickets in 262 One-Day Internationals and 373 wickets in 87 Tests.

Along with Wasim Akram, Waqar formed one of the most famous bowling duo, during the early 1990s.

Waqar has not decided on his future career, but would like to remain in cricket.
