North defeat South by 6 wickets

Monday, February 9 2004

A Mathew Sinclair century and an unbeaten 47 by Chris Cairns were enough to take North Island to a six wicket win over South Island in the State of Origin match at Jade Stadium.

South Island batted first and were restricted to 184-9 off their 50 overs. South Island were struggling at 117-8, before Aaron Redmond (50*) and Andrew Schwass (26) put on 54 runs for the 9th wicket before Ian Butler broke through for North Island.

Michael Mason and Daryl Tuffey ripped through the South Island innings leaving them at 19-4. Peter Fulton (41) and Chris Harris (24) gave South Island a chance, before the Northern Districts trio of Tuffey, Butler and Daniel Vettori pegged South back with regular wickets. Vettori finished with 10-3-22-2 as the most economical along with Tuffey who took 3-22 off 8.

Redmond and Schwass frustrated North Island by putting on a useful partnership that gave them hope. Clearly North weren't able to finish them off.

North were pegged back to be in at 80-4 and the South Islanders had their tails and though they were in with a chance. However Cairns and Sinclair had other ideas putting together a partnership of 107 for the fifth wicket ended South's hopes.

North won it in the 41st over with 14 runs being hit off it. Chris Martin was the pick of the South bowlers with 10-1-36-3. Sinclair finished on 105* and Cairns 47*.

South Island 184-9 (Redmond 50*, Fulton 41, Schwass 26; Tuffey 3-22), Vettori 2-22)
